The History of the UCI Cycling World Championship

The UCI Cycling World Championship traces its roots back to 1921 when the first event was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. Since then, the championship has grown in scale and popularity, attracting participants from various continents, making it a true representation of the international cycling community.

The Format and Races of UCI Cycling World Championship 2023

The 2023 UCI Cycling Esports World Championships will consist of three short and explosive events: The Punch, The Climb, and The Podium, which will be contested on three separate routes.

THE PUNCH -The Punch (one men’s and one women’s race) will see 100 riders of each gender at the start of a 13.8km race over rolling terrain. This first race will be crucial, as only the top 30 will qualify for the next race, with the rest being eliminated from the competition.

THE CLIMB

The second race will see the remaining 30 riders (both male and female) start The Climb. Also in a short format, The Climb will consist of hill repetitions on a specially designed hill climb, with a total length of 8.5 km and 162 m of vertical gain. Only the top 10 finishers of both categories will advance to the next stage, The Podium.

THE PODIUMThe Podium will take place on the last of the three new circuits containing short, challenging climbs, and will see riders fighting for position, as one rider is eliminated through each archway until three riders remain. These riders will then battle it out to the finish in a bid to win the title of UCI World Champion. (for more health benefits check out the article on Benefits of Desktop yoga.)

UCI Cycling World Championship and Sustainability

UCI cycling world championship

The UCI is committed to promoting sustainable practices in cycling events, including reducing carbon footprints and minimizing environmental impacts.

We know that significant impacts on the environment, people, communities, and businesses will depend on how goods and services are procured for the event.

Providing opportunities for local businesses to participate in the event reduces transportation emissions and helps ensure funding stays in Scotland as part of a green recovery.

Monitoring how the code has been applied will help us capture the challenges for circular procurement and identify good practices to benefit future events, suppliers, and communities in Scotland and further afield.
